3D multi-path connectivity for the 6G era

NexaSphere is pioneering the next generation of connectivity through a 3D multi-path network of networks, integrating spaceborne, airborne, and terrestrial infrastructures. The project addresses the evolving needs of mobile transportation, smart cities, and connected communities, laying the technological foundation for Europe’s future 6G ecosystem.

As part of the Smart Networks and Services Joint Undertaking (SNS-JU) Phase 2, NexaSphere advances the integration of Terrestrial Networks (TN) and Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN) into a unified, AI-orchestrated 3D architecture.

Project focus

NexaSphere focuses on the design, development, and validation of a unified 3D communication architecture that enables seamless multi-connectivity across:

Satellite constellations (LEO & GEO)

Airborne platforms

Ground-based 5G and 6G networks

Wireless-optical technologies (FSO & LiFi)

Project overview

Motivation

  • Rapid expansion of LEO satellite constellations disrupting traditional GEO models
  • Evolution of 3GPP NTN framework for integrated satellite-terrestrial connectivity
  • Increasing demand for high-capacity, low-latency, and resilient connectivity
  • Growing need for resilient communication against congestion and disruption
  • Requirement for sustainable and energy-efficient network architectures
  • Emergence of 6G requiring AI-driven orchestration and edge-cloud integration

Objectives

  • Design and validate a 6G-based satellite network with onboard processing and storage capabilities
  • Define the technical specifications for a unified TN–NTN 3D communication architecture
  • Integrate RF and wireless-optical technologies (FSO & LiFi) within unified multi-path terminals
  • Enable sustainable, energy-efficient air-interface operations and terminal designs
  • Ensure seamless TN–NTN coexistence through advanced multi-path protocols (MPTCP, MPQUIC)
  • Implement AI-driven, self-adaptive orchestration and resource allocation across the network
  • Demonstrate TRL 5 end-to-end services for aviation, railway, and automotive sectors while contributing to European standardization and long-term 6G roadmaps

Vision

  • Establish a 3D Network of Networks integrating TN and NTN infrastructures
  • Enable native multi-path transmission and seamless multi-connectivity
  • Extend the edge-cloud continuum from ground to space
  • Empower mobile transportation, smart cities, and smart communities

Desired Results

  • Early-stage hardware prototypes and integrated software algorithms
  • Demonstration of the Radio & Wireless-Optical Connectivity Continuum
  • Scalable hardware-in-the-loop simulation models
  • Validated AI-based orchestration mechanisms
  • Proven 3D connectivity benefits for mobility verticals
